Masai People

Watch the video and answer the following question: What are your thoughts on their lifestyle simply judging from the pictures?

After you've watched the video and commented, read the post below and answer the discussion questions at the end:

Day 5 – Masai Village
The visit of the Masai Village was the most unique part of the trip.  The Masai people are found throughout east Africa, and they tend to live on the most infertile of areas. They are semi-nomadic, and tend to herd goats and cattle. As you drive through northern Tanzania, you see young and old Masai tending to their herds, and almost every one of them will wave at you as you pass by.  I was nervous about the visit of the village, but came away feeling ashamed that I didn’t remember what Hemingway had written about the people. The following excerpt is from Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway:
"This was the finest country I had seen but we went on, winding along through the big trees over the softly rolling grass. Then ahead and to the right we saw the high stockage of a Masai village. It was a very large village and out of it came running long-legged, brown, smooth-moving men who all seemed to be of the same age and who wore their hair in a heavy club-like queue that swung against their shoulders as they ran. They came up to the car and surrounded it, all laughing and smiling and talking. They all were tall, their teeth were white and good, and their hair was stained a red brown and arranged in a looped fringe on their foreheads. They carried spears and they were very handsome and extremely jolly, not sullen, nor contemptuous like the northern Masai, and they wanted to know what we were going to do…
…We were moving and they were running again now. The Masai stooped and put the rabbit on the ground and as he ran free they all laughed. M’Cola shook his head. We were all very impressed by these Masai….Seeing them running and so damned handsome and so happy made us all happy. I had never seen such quick disinterested friendliness, nor such fine looking people….They certainly were our friends though. They had that attitude that makes brothers, that unexpressed but instant and complete acceptance that you must be Masai wherever it is you come from. That attitude you only get from the best of the English, the best of the Hungarians, and the very best Spaniards; the thing that used to be the most clear distinctions of nobility when there was nobility. It is an ignorant attitude and the people who have it do not survive, but very few pleasanter things ever happen to you than the encountering of it." (Hemingway 123)
The idea “that you must be Masai” is exactly how I felt when I met the Masai people. They were charming, friendly, and incredibly hospitable. Never once did I feel like I was intruding, and here I was taking pictures of them as if they were some sort of show. I don’t feel I could describe the Masai people as well as Heminway does above, so watch the video again and think about what Hemingway means when he talks about “an ignorant attitude and the people who have it do not survive.”
What is the “attitude” that Hemingway is referring to? Describe it in your own words.
Also, what were your thoughts when you first saw the video, and how are they different after reading the post?

  1. German-

Hemingway is referring to how Masai are mostly carefree and don’t want to have problems with others. All they want to do is live their lives.

When I first saw the video I thought the Masai people would be protective of themselves from outsiders and not want to be interviewed or photographed. Now I see that they actually don’t care about pictures or interviews. They are as interested to meet outsiders as outsiders are to meet them.

  2. Judging from the video, I think the Masai people live a very simple life. They don’t have all the things we have here in America and I think that they were happy just that way.
Also, I think that the “attitude” that Hemingway was referring to was the happiness of the people and the way they greeted others that they had never even met before. The Masai people didn’t get defensive of their homeland or try to push out any visitors; instead they welcomed in newcomers and were friendly to them.

  3. Judging from the video, the Masai people live a very simple life. In America we always want the finer things; we think having a simple life does not make us happy. The Masai people makes a simple life fun, they seem to be happy in that way. Also, the Masai is so much friendlier than in America. Now I think they love outsiders and curious about us like how we are with them.
I think that the "attitude" of Hemingway is that the Masai people are one of the friendliest group of people he ever met. The Masai are down to earth people; they are unique in their own way.

  7. Im amazed by their way of life.. Its incredible how they may not have it all but can still put a smile on and to them life may not be the greatest but its good enough. They work a lot together to get things done. They dress nothing like us and their space to learn is very limited. Im amused by how these people live. They are truly strong.

  8. the masai are carefree and friendly, and live in a way that they feel is good. i may not be able to live that way. When i saw the video i was taken back at what the children look like and the people look , it makes you think that no matter how little they have they can make the most at it. When Hemingway talks about it you can see it.

  11. It is interesting how those people are so happy having almost nothing, and those who have everything are never happy with what they have. shows ho different it is in another part of the world.

  12. The masia people are comfortable with thier lifestyle and so the little things life gives them makes them smile. just because they dont live in nice homes and have to hunt for food doesnt mean they are miserable.

  13. Masia people are fine with their lifestyles, they are happy with what they have and very greatful. They don't need a lot of money and big houses and flashy cars like people in America need to make them happy. I think for them being alive makes them happy enough.

After viewing the video the Masia people look happy and you would think that they would be against having pictures and interviews but they look very happy to just have vistors around.

  14. Its so crazy how different people in different places live. judging by this video the Masai people look very happy with there style of living. Happy in a way that everything they have even if is not much they make the best out of it. They enjoy every little thing that comes there way. Completely carefree and thankful. Hemingway's attitude refers to the Masai's carefree life that allows them to live their lives very happy.

  15. The Masai People were not describe the same as how the video show them to be. I didn't imagine that they would look like regular people but the difference that they live in infertiled land. And we don't. Even though they live like they live they seem happy and thankful for what they have. And you can see all of that just in their faces. The children happy that their picture is been taken. But after viewing the video before The reading it shocked me on how they look after reading and watching the video again. Its interesting how that works of the way they dress and their happiness when been visit by other around the world.

  16. anyone can tell another person they love them and not mean it, it takes a true bond built by time spent and experience to know that its a given, to know it doesn't have to be said cause its just a word that holds no weight, that what the Masai have. its not an ignorant attitude, because they have to be optimistic not just so there not stressed but because its in there thought process, all they have to worry about is survival, the village, and there people. whats the purpose of bring there self down, they don't have to worry about all the self-conscious things that make the youth and aged people of this country stressed or dissatisfied about there lives cause it won't fix anything complaining or feeling down.

  17. the masai are carefree and happy people that would accept anyone even if your not one of them, but they would treat you as if you one of them. The video show that the masai are simple people and caring .

  18. I like how they learn to live with what they have and aren't un-grateful like most people in the united states.

I think that the "attitude" that is being shown is that the Masai people are easy going people, they don't live fancy lives like we do but yet they do well without the stuff we "can't" function with.

  19. The people from masai look really friendly as long as you dont mess with with them obviously their culture is completely different than ours, and adapt differently than us in their environment.

  20. the attitude that is being shown be the masai people is an attitude of loving the simple thing in life and being happy with what they have because being happy is alot better then being sad there culture is much simpler then ares they dont need all our technology and stuff to be happy they just need each other and the world around them.

  22. The kids dress in old worn out clothes when they are in school and have to squish together to fit in the desks made for them. The chalk boards they use to learn math and other skills as well as are dated but the manage to make the best of everything they have.

  24. they seem happy with the conditions of the environment around them . its like the dont care about having more than what they have . they cope with what the little things they have .

  25. The people there seem to not care about the conditions they are in, every one is very nice/friendly to everybody no matter what. The video reminds me of a small citie and everyone knows eachother and treats everyone like a big family. They dont live in the best society, but thats besides the point... The point is that they dont care about the physical appereance, they care about something far more important, this is how everyone should be in the world.
